Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect from my first counselling session with you?

We will already have spoken to each other in our introductory session. The ‘work’ in counselling happens as we build a therapeutic relationship together. In our first session we will talk about what your expectations are and really make sure that I am the right counsellor for you. We will go through the contract for our work together and I can answer any questions you may have.

How does counselling even work?

As every person and every therapeutic relationship is unique, counselling experiences are too. My role as a counsellor is to help us to create a space together where you feel really heard and listened to. This can sound quite obvious, but it can be a very moving, it can feel intense and even challenging sometimes.

How long will I need to come to counselling sessions?

I offer short term and longer term counselling. It really is up to you and we will regularly review how you feel and what is working for you and what is not. Giving feedback about how you are experiencing our sessions together is a useful part of our work.

How long are the sessions?

Normally our sessions are weekly and will last for 50 minutes. For some people this might not feel quite right and we can talk about that at our introductory session together.

How do I pay for my counselling fees?

Session fees are due 24 hours in advance of each session. Some people choose to pay for blocks of sessions.

What if I need urgent help?

If you are in immediate distress then I would urge you to go to your local Accident and Emergency department in hospital or contact 999; if it is not an emergency but you need urgent care advice 111 - https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/mental-health-services/.

What if I want to change to a different counsellor?

Counselling is about the relationship that we create together. Sometimes it just might not feel like the right fit for you. That is ok. You can find other therapists using the NCPS directory. I would recommend that we have an ending session together if you are able to do that.
